Chapter Seven

Three days later, Gunnar watched his wife smile as another of her father’s friends hugged her and told her how much Lucas would be missed. The funeral had gone well, though he thought the minister opening the floor up to anyone who wanted to eulogize her father had been a bit of overkill. A dozen people had stepped up to share stories of how Lucas Hall had touched their lives, dragging what was supposed to be a thirty-minute service out to nearly two hours.

Jillian looked exhausted, but her smile never wavered. Only he, and possibly Blaze, knew it was there by sheer force of will. She had not cried since the morning after her father died when he’d spanked her, and he could see she was edging close to a breaking point. But he couldn’t sweep her up in his arms and carry her away. They were, after all, hosting this reception.

He was ready for this whole thing to be over and life to return to its hectic, but somewhat more normal pattern. Unfortunately, he knew that would not be happening for a while longer. Jillian had managed to push the shareholders’ meeting back a week and now that Lucas was buried, she would be focused on finalizing reports and arrangements for that.

“That girl needs a night at the club,” Dominic Zaccaro said softly as he moved to stand beside him in the corner he had retreated to after hearing for the dozenth time how much of a saint his father-in-law was.

“We both do,” Gunnar agreed. “But she’s got the annual shareholders’ meeting next week and I may have to fly back to Texas to finalize some things before that. At some point, I’d like to discuss with you a possible business proposal concerning the club.”

Dominic sipped at his glass of water before nodding. “I’m always interested in listening to business proposals.”

The two men chuckled and continued watching the room. Gunnar was glad to see the crowd was finally beginning to thin out as the catering staff he’d hired to deal with the food began clearing the tables. It took another half hour, but finally the only people left were their friends from Club Esoteria. Gunnar finally left his corner and went to his woman’s side.

Pulling her in for a hug, he kissed her temple and held her securely as she relaxed into his body. Speaking so only she could hear his words, he said, “You did good, subbie. Your dad would be touched and honored by all the tributes shared today.”

Leaning back, she smiled up at him, the grief and exhaustion of the past week clearly evident. They definitely needed to make some changes in their lives, and the sooner the better. After dropping a kiss on her lips, he encouraged her to lay her head on his shoulder and rest. He invited their friends back to the house to help them eat some of the many, many dishes that had been brought by friends and neighbors. The caterers had been instructed to take any uneaten food to the homeless shelter.
